Please post comments and questions for 'What Do You Do In San Fransisco?' here...

1 comment:

  1. Theme:
    - Working to forget problems (last statement mailman makes in the story)
    - Why did the mailman call out advice? and then recommended work?
    - Sally Wilson from the welcome wagon. a gossipy small town, Rumors? "most folks seemed to believe"

    Setting:
Town, not too small , not too big
    - Messy house, not neat, but not dirty

    Symbol/Motif:
-Changing the name on the letterbox, may represent Martson not developing his own identity and moving forward in life much, like how he does not move forward from his wife near the end.

    Character:
The man with the beard went through a change.
-"Their Mamma and dadda were nowheres to be seen"- Mailman, country accent, and questioning their parenting.
-"U-Haul still in front yard"-mailman, makes them out to be lazy for not moving it yet.
    - "Easel covered by a sheet" "Paintings with their faces turned away" What is it she is hiding, or is she shy about her paintings?
    - The mailman refers to Martson by his name and his wife as "her" or "the woman" or "his wife", is he more disrespectful towards wifes because of his own past failed marriage?
    - Wife listening with all ears, then next minute gets up and starts painting. Rude for a country town and not in the city? Mental disorder? selfish?
    - The mailman: Not frivolous or serious, opinionated about others? opinionated about Martsons wife because of his divorce? Opinionated about work ethic because it wasa his way of dealing with things? But at the same time concerned for the young man as he can relate. " I wanted to help the boy somehow, if I could but I didn't know how"
-Why does he observe everything and notice the whole street? is it because his own life is not very interesting?
    - Martsos went through a change, What did the letter say and who was it from?
    - Martson (in the mailmans opinion) had a negative influence from his wife, when he (the mailman) says things like "She encouraged it" (about not working).

    Other:
    - In the end, after Martson looked out the window, did he move on or commit suicide?
    - "Martson didn't look too happy about Jer". Was Jer an ex (or aquantence) that Martsons wife got back with?
    - How did the mailman find out Martson had went to his mother's house with the kids?
