  1. Here is my analysis:
Plot: Mr Staler, an unemployed man living alone in his house is awaiting a letter. A stranger knocks on his door and demands that he comes in, claiming Mrs Slater has won a prize. Mr Slater doesn't really want the stranger in his house but this intruding man insists that he stays. He explains that Mrs Slater had won a lottery and gets a free vacuuming and carpet clean with a new product he is advertising. He cleans Mr Slater's house and pockets a letter that recently arrived addressed to Mr Slater, then leaves.

Theme: Recurring mention of someone who's not there- a void (in this case Mrs Slater) and intrusion - A stranger entering his house unwillingly and Mr Slater just really wants him to leave. Mr Slater doesn't care about the product and his thoughts are elsewhere. He doesn't want his belongings to be cleaned- because of wife?

Setting: Mr Slater's house, which appears to be quite dirty judging by the strangers impressions. Lives by himself now but used to live with Mrs Slater, which makes you wonder where she has gone. It's also suggested that Mr Slater is leaving the house soon.

Symbols: Maybe the letter and how Mr Slater awaits it but never gets to read it because the cleaner takes it from his carpet. Also the state of the house and how Aubrey says that you leave parts of yourself everywhere and therefore there are traces of Mrs Slater through the house, Maybe thats why Mr Slater doesn't want him to clean, he is 'collecting' her memories

Characters: Mr Slater- 'in between jobs' seems lonely even a bit depressed
Aubrey Palmer- comes across as a dominating unfit salesman who talks to himself, seems very persistent
Mrs Slater- don't know anything about other than that she used to live in the house and is now absent.

Other: I get the feeling that Mr Slater really doesn't like Aubrey or appreciate what he is doing because Aubrey is often referred to as 'he' which creates distance and Mr Slaters describes him in negative terms - fat, until, dodgy, and even suspicious

    Questions:
    Who is Mrs Slater?
    Where has she gone?
    Whats in the letter?
Why do they both want to read it so badly?
What does Aubrey think of the situation?
